Goldman cocktail party.

Who is behind Goldman Sachs??? It was formerly run by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson (the chief executive officer)

Christopher Dodd of Connecticut, who chairs the Senate Banking Committee and is a presidential candidate, asked Paulson to respond to allegations leveled in an op-ed column in the Sunday New York Times.

Dodd is threatening to make an inquiry whether he,Paulson sold shaky mortgages to investors while betting they would fail.

The column, by economist, actor and former TV game show host Ben Stein, called on Goldman to explain "just what Wall Street and Goldman did to make money as they pumped this mortgage mess into the economic system, and sometimes were seemingly on both sides of the deal."

Dodd, in a statement issued by his presidential campaign office, said he was "deeply concerned" about the issues raised by Stein. He called on Paulson to respond to the article, adding that "failure to do so may be cause for a more formal investigation."

Goldman has been able to avoid the massive losses on mortgages that have rocked Wall Street this year, partly by betting that the value of home loans would decline -- also known as taking a short position.

Wall Street firms often buy mortgage-backed securities that they sell to investors and can take short positions to hedge against defaults.

Can this be another scandal in the making? The tussle is on.
